Bruce Wilkins, a five-year GCRA member, has been named as Program Director for the 2010 season. The Program Director's primary responsibility is to guide current and prospective GCRA members toward the appropriate program and groups within the organization. Additionally, the Program Director serves as a central information source, oversees coaching efforts, coordinates resources, and provides feedback to the GCRA Program Committee.
What attracted you to the Program Director position? The nature of the Program Director’s job itself attracted me to the position. The primary focus of the position is to be the central source of information about GCRA. The Program Director also helps people find the appropriate rowing opportunity, within GCRA, that matches their rowing experience/skill and interests. Helping people interested in the sport of rowing as a GCRA’s ombudsman is something that will give me great personal satisfaction.
What are you most looking forward to about the 2010 season? First of all, in 2010 a wide range of rowing opportunities and instruction will be available. Individuals and groups will have the option of choosing between structured programs, which are staffed and supported by GCRA, and non-structured rowing opportunities. At times novice rowers who have completed GCRA’s Learn-to-Row Program need additional help or guidance to find the next step in their maturation as a rower. Experienced rowers, at times, need help or guidance in choosing the specific direction that meets their specific needs. I am looking forward to helping rowers find the best rowing opportunity within GCRA that meets their rowing objectives. What goals do you have for GCRA's programs for the 2010 season? My first goal, of course, is to help rowers fully utilize the appropriate GCRA program to meet their personal rowing objectives. A secondary objective is to monitor GCRA’s overall rowing offerings to ensure that the organizational objectives are being met. How long have you been involved with GCRA? I joined GCRA five years ago and learned to row through GCRA’s Learn-to-Row Program. Being somewhat new to the sport of rowing, I still can identify with questions a new rower may have toward the sport and the club. Since joining GCRA, I’ve had the opportunity to work within the organization as the Chairman the Safety Committee, a Trustee, and most recently the Chairman of the Website Committee that redesigned this website.
