Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never rowed before but it looks awesome! How do I get started?

Please consider attending one of our Learn to Row sessions. We aim to offer two Learn to Row sessions each summer (one for sweep rowing, the other for sculling). Each session is 6 weeks long with both afternoon and morning time slots available. The camp introduces the basics of rowing equipment, technique, terminology, and most of the time is spent on the water in the boat! Please visit the Learn to Row page for more information.

What types of rowing are offered?

GCRA offers a wide variety of rowing opportunities. We offer programs and equipment for both sweep rowing and sculling. Our membership spans a wide range from recreational to competitive rowers.

I have prior rowing experience and want to join GCRA. What are my options?

A membership at GCRA grants full access to club facilities and equipment and the ability to enroll in coached programs. Please visit the Adult Memberships page for more information. Coached program availability and cost vary by season. Please contact an officer for more information.

Can I join a coached program?

The GCRA membership provides for on-your-own logbook rowing. Depending on coaching availability, there may be recreational or competitive coached programs available to members at additional cost. Please inquire with an officer to find out what programs are currently being offered.

Is there an age requirement?

Members of GCRA and participants in Learn to Row must be at least 18 years old. There is no maximum age!

Can I row as a guest?

Guests are permitted up to 3 rows at GCRA per year. To row more than 3 times, you must sign up for a membership. All guests must fill out the Liability Waiver and be with a member of GCRA at all times. Our club is entirely volunteer-driven, so to request a guest row, please provide your expected travel dates and a brief summary of your rowing abilities/preferences. Contact an officer.

I do not plan to row at GCRA all year. Can I pro-rate my membership?

No, we do not offer pro-rated memberships. Below are some membership options that help accommodate partial years:

  • The half-year adult membership runs from August 1st-March 31st is a good option for those who may be joining us late in the membership year.

  • The collegiate membership is a full year membership at a reduced price.

  • The Out-of-Town monthly membership provides out-of-town rowers the option to become a member for up to 3 months.

Please visit the Adult Memberships page for more information.

I am not a member. Can I rent a boat?

GCRA does not rent boats to the public.

Can I rent the boathouse for an event?

GCRA is not involved in the scheduling of non-rowing events in the facility. If you would like to inquire about event rentals, please contact the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, Permit and Rental Services.
